Thoughts and opinions on conceptions and misconceptions in the media and popular culture regarding psychotherapy, psychiatric diagnoses, mental illness, and happiness.
Welcome to Peak Mental Wellness and Counseling's mental wellness blog!
My name is Michael Wiley, LCSW (licensed clinical social worker), and I will be the primary contributor to this blog. I am the owner and clinical director of Peak Mental Wellness. I'm sure that everyone is familiar with the disclaimer "the opinions and views expressed herein are not necessarily those of the management", etc., etc. In this case the reverse is true (at least those entries written by me) - the opinions and views expressed herein ARE those of the management.
The purpose of this blog will be to discuss issues in psychology, psychotherapy, counseling, mental wellness, psychiatric diagnoses, psychiatric medications and the treatment of emotional suffering (mental disorders). I will be bringing to this my 27 years of experience as a therapist, and my thousands of hours of experience providing psychotherapy to a wide range of people experiencing problems or suffering in their lives and what they have taught me. My hope is that my blog entries will provide a counter point to the misconceptions about therapy and emotional suffering that are proliferated by the popular press, on TV and in movies. My intent is to provide clarity and context to some of the popular misunderstandings about psychotherapy. Of course, there's always the possibility that I am just adding to the noise and confusion, so I hope that my colleagues and clients will hold me accountable.
Anyone wishing to comment on posts to this blog should use the "Contact Us" email form on the website. That way I don't have to monitor comments on an almost hourly basis to make sure that someone hasn't posted something inappropriate or offensive. If your comment is worthy of a response, I'll respond on the blog; if it isn't appropriate or germane it will be ignored.
I dedicate this blog to the several hundred individuals, couples and families who have given me the opportunity to share a sliver of their lives, their struggles and their triumphs. You have been my best teachers.
